Biography

Remco, forever a story teller, mines memories and lays them out like a series of MUSTY little cushions.  Deeply personal anecdotes from his time working with meaningful and incredibly intriguing protagonists, his writing explores significant issues between people; beautiful and tragic.  Growling mighty vocals or soft, gentle whispers, roots folk pop reminiscent of Waits, Buckley, and Plaskett stirs the room when he’s on stage..

While he performed at many open stages around Edmonton in the early 2000, and was involved with setting up open stages at his university when he was younger, his songwriting and performing really began to blossom while living abroad.  During this time, his writing was prolific and the playful beginnings of his lyrical comfort zones emerged, finding his voice as a songwriter.  He recorded a 3 song EP “The Albumen” (2003) to a limited release.  His time in South Korea was fraught with adventure and possibilities but certainly his time recreating some great rock classics (You Shook Me All Night Long; Fat Bottom Girls)  in his bluegrass cover band Kettle Mountain Social, remain some of the most boisterous fun he’s ever had on stage.

Returning to Edmonton in 2008 and reconnecting with an old friend (Joel Kleine) several years later, the two began writing and performing together in edmonton.  Having played excellent opportunities through the mid 2010s (Secret Setlist; ArtFest; Highlandia; EPL Song Series) in his previous musical project (Bomproof the Horses). They produced and released their 4 track EP “The ground the sky” to critical praise in 2014 and were supported by radio play on CBC, CKUA and CJSR where they reached #7.

After a creative hiatus of several years, Remco revisited his songwriting roots in an effort to process some complicated events happening around him.  Songs started to trickle back and intermittent shows around town became more frequent in 2021. At this time, together with his friend Ido Vanderlaan, he formed Simon Says Art, a Simon and Garfunkel tribute act in which he had opportunities to play original tunes.  A very short tour on Vancouver island rounded off a summer with several gigs throughout Alberta and the capital region.

Hoping to broaden his exposure through Western Canada, Remco will be recording an EP later this year.  He plays solo shows or shares the stage with other singer songwriter friends though he is in the process of constructing a group of like-minded individuals to fill out his sound with solid instrumentation and deeper layers.
